Honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. David Blandino

JHF mourns the passing of David Blandino, MD, 73, former residency director of family medicine at UPMC Shadyside and longtime Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative Board member, following a long illness. Dr. Blandino devoted more than four decades to family medicine and to improving access to care for the Pittsburgh community.

Dr. Blandino practiced in community clinics in the Hill District and concluded his career at East Liberty Family Health Care Center, a federally qualified health center with a faith-based mission. He combined clinical excellence with a commitment to training the next generation of physicians while serving as residency director at UPMC Shadyside.

A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and a former NCAA Scholar-Athlete, Dr. Blandino brought intellectual rigor and compassion to his work. His leadership extended beyond direct patient care. Dr. Blandino guided the Allegheny Health Network (AHN) as chair of the AHN Board for more than a decade, helping shape the network’s growth and its focus on community-centered care.

Dr. Blandino will be remembered for his humility, warmth, and conviction that health care is a calling of service. His career exemplified the values the Foundation advances through its efforts to strengthen the healthcare workforce and expand equitable access to care across the region.
