The Jewish Healthcare Foundation (JHF) honors the passing of Dr. Susanne Gollin following a long and courageous battle with cancer. A beloved member of the JHF Board and a respected leader in science and community health, Dr. Gollin served as Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health. She was best known for her pioneering oncology research and leadership, as well as her passion for quilting, gardening, activism, and politics.
“When I first arrived in Pittsburgh, Susanne was one of the first people I sought out. My father, knowing we shared a background in cytogenetics and cancer genetics — and perhaps simply because we were both women scientists — encouraged me to meet her,” said Gollin’s colleague Wendy Mars, PhD. Wendy remembers her and Susanne’s work intersecting and Susanne’s kindness and passion for science.
Susanne brought not only exceptional expertise in genetic toxicology and cancer research but also a profound sense of purpose and humanity to all that she did, including her deep commitment to her students, who went to great lengths to support her in the final stages of her illness.
“Susanne’s passion for ensuring that all could experience the fullness of life extended beyond the confines of the laboratory. Whether it was as a Judge of Elections at the local level or her commitment at the national level to elect leaders that guaranteed the rights of all had no bounds," said Board member Mary Esther Van Shura, EdD. "In her relentless pursuit of justice, as it was in her own life, obstacles were opportunities to overcome so all could live a full life. Indeed, our lives are fuller because of her.”
Susanne was a tireless advocate for community health and empowerment. Her wisdom, integrity, and warmth enriched the work of the Foundation and inspired everyone who had the privilege to know her.
“She was an extraordinary person, and I feel very privileged to have known her,” JHF President and CEO, Karen Wolk Feinstein, PhD said during April’s Board meeting. “I wanted to acknowledge her and that she is here, and will continue to be here, in spirit.”
