Familiarity with PrEP for HIV prevention in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, 2024

Type: Research Papers

Focus Area: HIV/AIDS

A study in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania assessed familiarity with PrEP, a key HIV prevention tool, among different demographic groups. Out of 1,334 respondents, 46% were familiar with PrEP, while 39.4% were not. Familiarity was highest among men who have sex with men, non-cisgender individuals, sex workers, and those recently diagnosed with STIs, but lower among people who inject drugs. A multivariate analysis revealed injection drug use was significantly associated with familiarity when controlling for age, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation. These findings suggest the need for targeted education and outreach to improve PrEP awareness, especially as new HIV prevention methods emerge.
