Inside Pittsburgh’s push to make healthcare safer through simulation
Type: Editorial
Focus Area: Patient Safety

Simulation training has become a cornerstone of modern medical education, enabling clinicians to practice routine procedures and rare emergencies in realistic, risk-free environments before treating patients—ultimately reducing medical errors and improving outcomes. An April 29 Pittsburgh Business Times article highlights regional leaders in this work, including UPMC’s Winter Institute for Simulation, Education, and Research (WISER) and AHN’s Simulation, Teaching, and Academic Research (STAR) Center, and explores how expanding simulation-based learning—and potentially creating a national patient safety board—could further prevent harm and strengthen patient care nationwide.
